Mr. Ian KH THAM is a member of Hjen & Co.
Ian has over 35 years of banking and insurance-based institutional asset management and investment banking experience.
From 2010 to 2012, Ian was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of KFH Asset Management Sdn Bhd and KFH Asset Management Pte Ltd (Singapore) (“KFHAM”). He was responsible in providing overall strategic direction, accountability for its Syriah compliant private equity investment management and funds businesses including annual/ longer term business and financial results for Kuwait Finance House.
Prior to his appointment at KFHAM, Ian was the Principal Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CMS Trust Management Berhad from 2007 to 2009 (Malaysia); and, Principal Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CMS Asset Management Sdn Bhd from 2004 to 2006 (Malaysia). Ian was instrumental in the merger of the entities and the architect of the subsequent divestment of the unit trust and asset management businesses to Kenanga Investment Bank
(Malaysia) in 2010.
In 1996, Ian was recruited by Dresdner Bank AG to establish Dresdner Asset Management. He was the founder Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Allianz Global Investors (“Allianz GI Singapore”) for 11 years, responsible for the ASEAN and India sub-continent; a member of the Allianz GI Regional Management Executive Committee; and a member of the Allianz Life – Asset Management Executive Committee. He established Allianz GI’s asset management and unit trust businesses in Singapore and grew total Asset Under Management to more than USD 5 billion during his tenure.
More significantly, he positioned Allianz GI Singapore as one of 5 strategic global equities fund managers of the Government Investment Corporation (“GIC” – one of the world’s largest Sovereign Wealth Funds); one of 2 strategic fund managers of the Board of Commissioners of Currency (BCCS); and, one of 5 Fund Managers of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS); including, the national pension fund of Malaysia (EPF – Employees Fund) and for the Central Provident Fund(CPF) of Singapore during his tenure. In business partnership with GIC, Allianz GI established their first Global Sector Equities Funds.
At Allianz GI, Ian was also a Director of the Dresdner International Provident Funds (Singapore), RCM Total Return Fund (Cayman Islands), RCM China Fund (Cayman Islands), Allianz GI RCM Global High Payout Fund (Singapore) and Allianz GI PIMCO Funds (Singapore and Luxembourg).
Prior to joining Dresdner Bank AG/ Allianz GI, Ian was recruited in 1994 by AIG Investment Corporation (Asia) in Hong Kong as Director for Business Development and Strategy for Asia. Reporting to Mr. Cesar Zalamea, Ian was involved in the establishment of AIG Asia Infrastructure Fund – the world’s first and then-largest valued at USD 1.3 billion, and responsible for the establishment of the joint AIG-GIC investment management team in Singapore. Ian was also responsible for the establishment of the first joint-venture asset management company in Japan between Mitsubishi Trust Corporation and AIG; and the joint-venture private equity investment company in India between HDFC Bank and AIG.
Ian was also responsible for the investment management operations of Philam Life Asset Management in the Philippines, and subsequently established AIG Investment Management Pte Ltd in Singapore before being recruited by Dresdner Bank AG to establish and manage Dresdner Asset Management Pte Ltd in Singapore.
Prior to that, Ian was recruited in 1986, together with the White Weld team of First Boston, by then-Chairman (Asia) to join Merrill Lynch Capital Markets (Singapore) as Assistant Vice-President responsible for Nikkei 225 Stock Index Futures Arbitrage. He was subsequently promoted to Vice-President responsible for Sales/ Trading – US Treasuries and Corporates before returning to DBS (Bank) Asset Management in 1991.
Ian started his career at the Development Bank of Singapore (currently, DBS Bank) in Corporate Finance in the Investment Banking Division. He was then transferred to the Investment Management Division responsible for its proprietary trading and investment portfolio for Fixed Income, Interest Rates and Convertible Bonds. Among his notable achievements that he worked on, brought to market, and managed include a proprietary investment portfolio, the listing of Singapore Airlines (Singapore’s national carrier) in 1984 and, later upon his return to DBS Asset Management as Senior Manager, the launch of the first Syriah compliant fund in the Asia Pacific – the Mendaki Growth Fund in 1991.
Besides being a member of Hjen & Co Singapore, Ian is currently an Independent Non-Executive Director on the Board of Directors of Manulife (Singapore) Pte Ltd. He is also a Member of the Manulife Global Advisory Committee (Asia); Chairperson of the Manulife (Singapore) Board Risk Committee; and a Member of the Audit Committee.
Ian is also currently a Director and Principal Shareholder of a few BioPharma investment holding companies incorporated in Singapore, that invests globally with a particular focus in Asia into medicinal and pharmaceutical grade medicinal plants, including the cultivation, research and development and the production and manufacturing of it for the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare industries.
